Costa Rican police confiscate almost 1,000 kilos of cocaine in six days

Authorities arrested a man Monday night after discovering he had 560 kilos of cocaine stored in a farming truck in the town of Cuajiniquil in La Cruz, located in the northwest Guanacaste province. The arrest was the second massive confiscation of cocaine in the last six days.

On May 18, a man was detained in the town of Miramar, in the Pacific province of Puntareanas, after police discovered 378 kilos of cocaine in his truck.

According to the National Police, on Monday at 10 p.m., a man with the last name of Alvarado was pulled over in Cuajiniquil driving a truck. Upon a search of the vehicle, police found 560 kilos of cocaine, nearly 2 million colones, $40 and two cell phones. Alvarado is alleged to be involved in drug-trafficking and will be placed in six months of preventive prison while he awaits trial.

According to Costa Rica’s Public Security Ministry, last year police seized 9,900 kilograms of cocaine, the second highest quantity in history, exceeded only by 2008.
