Costa Rican meteorologists advise keeping umbrellas handy throughout week

Heavy and intermittent rains are expected to continue through the remainder of the week in Costa Rica, National Meteorological Institute meteorologist Juan Diego Naranjo told The Tico Times on Tuesday.

“We expect rains to continue to be heavy most of the day Wednesday, followed by intermittent rains throughout the rest of the week,” he said.

Naranjo said heavy rains throughout the country during the early part of the week were caused by a low-pressure front that originated on the Caribbean coast of Panama. He said the hardest-hit regions were in the northeast of the country and along the Caribbean coast.

On Tuesday morning, the National Emergency Commission issued a yellow alert for the Caribbean and Sarapiquí regions in the Limón province. The commission reported that more than 1,000 people in the Sarapiquí canton had been transferred to shelters in case of flooding. Over 250 millimeters fell in Sarapiquí in a 24-hour period, according to the meteorological institute.

Naranjo said residents in mountainous areas should take precautions to avoid landslides, while communities near rivers should be wary of potential flooding. He added that people should carry an umbrella and expect cooler temperatures throughout the rest of the week.

“With continued rains, the temperature is expected to be colder than usual for this time of the year,” Naranjo said. “People should keep their umbrellas handy, as well as gloves, hats, scarves, jackets and boots.”
