Southwest Airlines Unveils Direct Costa Rica-Las Vegas Route

Southwest Airlines has set plans to introduce the first direct flight linking Costa Rica with Las Vegas, Nevada. This move aims to boost travel options between the two spots. The Costa Rican Tourism Institute shared details from the airline’s press release, noting this as the initial nonstop service to the U.S. city known for its shows and casinos.

Southwest marked a decade of flights to Costa Rica last year, linking several U.S. cities to our country’s key airports. This has supported steady growth in visitor numbers and ties between the nations.

The airline states the route kicks off on October 1, 2026, with daily operations. Departures from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas leave at 1:25 a.m., reaching Juan Santamaría International Airport in Costa Rica around 6 a.m. local time. Return trips from Costa Rica depart between noon and 1 p.m., lasting about seven hours.

Bookings opened today on Southwest’s site, allowing early reservations ahead of the start date. Tourism Minister William Rodríguez pointed out the value of this link. “This step bolsters our push to add more U.S. connections,” he said. He added that it opens Costa Rica’s attractions to Las Vegas residents and offers locals quick access to a major U.S. hub.

The U.S. ranks as Costa Rica’s top visitor source. Air arrivals from there hit close to 1.6 million in 2025, showing the need for more routes to main cities. This addition fits Southwest’s broader expansion, which includes other international paths from Las Vegas to places like Mexico. Yet, the Costa Rica route stands out as the airline’s first international red-eye flight.

Travelers can expect standard Southwest perks, such as two free checked bags and no change fees. The Boeing 737 aircraft will handle the service, fitting the airline’s focus on efficient operations. Tourism leaders here see potential for increased visits from the western U.S., where direct options were limited before. Las Vegas draws millions yearly, and this flight could tap into that crowd seeking nature and adventure in Costa Rica.

Officials at Juan Santamaría Airport prepare for the influx, with updates to handle more overnight arrivals. This aligns with efforts to modernize facilities and improve passenger flow. As air travel rebounds, routes like this help Costa Rica recover economically through tourism jobs and spending.

Southwest’s presence in Costa Rica began with flights to Baltimore and Houston, expanding over time. This Las Vegas addition marks another milestone in that partnership. For details on schedules and fares, check the airline’s website. Early booking might get you better rates as demand builds.
