Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) on Tuesday raided 12 locations – including some Public Security Ministry units – as part of an ongoing gunrunning investigation allegedly connected to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, according to statements from the OIJ and MSP.
The raids and arrests were the culmination of a Drug Control Police investigation into a group that allegedly trafficked drugs and cash across the Peñas Blancas border crossing with Nicaragua and on to Guatemala and Honduras.
Firefighters in the northwestern province of Guanacaste worked until 3 a.m. on Wednesday to extinguish a wildfire that destroyed at least five hectares of Palo Verde National Park. The damaged area is mostly pastureland and secondary forest, park administrator Ulises Chavarría García said.
