The Obama administration is attempting to assemble a network of shelters on U.S. military bases and other federal facilities to lodge thousands of children awaiting immigration proceedings after fleeing violence in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Nicaragua on Friday expelled two human rights activists allegedly without justification as they tried to enter the country, according to the human rights organizations involved, which demanded an explanation.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, 24,668 unaccompanied minors were apprehended at the U.S.-Mexican border in fiscal 2013. Officials expect the annual number will jump to nearly 60,000 by the end of fiscal 2014.
