The number of cumulative cases of violence committed against minors in Costa Rica has reached the highest figure in the last five years, according to a report released Thursday morning by the National Children's Hospital. To date, the medical center has registered 2,377 cases of child abuse this year alone.
Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) carried out two early-morning raids last Friday and arrested two minors for allegedly distributing child pornography in Santa Ana, southwest of the capital. Agents arrested a 16-year-old male and a 15-year-old female, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
"There's no doubt that Savile is one of the most, if not the most, prolific sex offender that we at the NSPCC have ever come across," said Peter Watt, director of child protection at the children's charity.
