Costa Rican fishing boats detained off Colombian coast

Colombian authorities detained three Costa Rican fishing vessels for allegedly fishing in protected waters in Colombia on Thursday, newswire FiS reported.

The Yamauri No.1,the Somarvi I and Jhonnatan 3, found approximately 490 kilometers off the Colombian coast, were allegedly fishing in marine sanctuaries and were found carrying assorted species of fish and sharks, according to FiS. Thirteen crewmembers – 11 Costa Ricans and 2 Nicaraguans – were detained and transferred into the custody of Colombian immigration officials.

In October, several Costa Rica boats were implicated in the slaughter of some 2,000 sharks in a marine sanctuary near Malpelo Island, about 380 km off the Pacific coast of Colombia.
