Government to begin expansion on Pan-American Highway

Vice President Luis Liberman on Tuesday signed a contract to begin expanding a section of the Pan-American Highway between Cañas and Liberia, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste.

Liberman penned the agreement with Spain’s FCC Consortium, which beat out 11 competitors.

The expansion includes a four-lane, 50-km highway, the construction of 18 bridges and the reinforcement of another 16. Total investment for the project will be $154 million, part of a $300 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank.

Public Works and Transport Minister Francisco Jiménez said the stretch of highway is a “key link in the the Pacific corridor, which connects Mexico to Panama across 3,244 km of road in seven countries.”
