United Nations expert seeks protection for journalists in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA – The United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of expression Frank La Rue made an official visit to Honduras Wednesday.

On his trip, the expert will examine the efforts of Honduras to implement the right to freedom of expression and the obstacles encountered at both national and international levels.

La Rue will also meet with government officials to identify ways to ensure that all individuals, including journalists, can exercise the right to expression without fearing for their safety.

He also intends to hold meetings with representatives from international agencies, non-governmental organizations and media associations.

The special rapporteur will release his recommendations in a final report, which will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in 2013.

According to official sources, 21 journalists have been killed in the last three years in Honduras.
