Tax Administration to close more businesses this week

Some 36 businesses, including supermarkets, department stores, bars, restaurants and hotels, may be closed by the Tax Administration in coming days due to tax violations.

Last week, the office closed 38 businesses for allegedly failing to pay taxes, and on Monday, officials resumed operations that could end in the closure of 74 businesses.

Tax Director Carlos Vargas said the businesses are accused of late payments, billing irregularities or failure to report sales tax.

“We want to send the message that we will apply the law to everyone who does not fulfill their obligations,” Vargas said.

Businesses must remain closed for five days.
