Moderate earthquake felt in Costa Rica on Wednesday morning

An earthquake with preliminary magnitude-5.2 shook most of Costa Rica on Wednesday morning.

The National Seismological Network reported the temblor at 6:19 a.m. with an epicenter located 19 kilometers from Nicoya, in the province of Guanacaste, the same area hit by a magnitude-7.6 earthquake that shook the region Sept. 5.

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) registered another magnitude-3.3 temblor at 6:26 a.m., originating 39 kilometers southwest of Bajo Escondido, Nicoya.

At 6:42 a.m., a third quake of magnitude-3.9 hit the same region. OVSICORI’s preliminary report registered a depth of 8 kilometers.

On Sept. 5, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake rattled Costa Rica, causing dozens of injuries and damaging buildings in the provinces of Guanacaste, Puntarenas and the capital San José.

Eight moderate quakes were registered in different parts of Puntarenas and Guanacaste between Sunday and Monday morning.
