Roadway Safety Council to auction seized vehicles

Authorities from the Roadway Safety Council (COSEVI) said Tuesday that some 5,200 seized motorcycles and cars will be auction in coming months if their owners do not claim them or pay their traffic fines.

The new Traffic Law authorizes COSEVI to auction cars or motorcycles if their owners don’t claim them within three months after they are seized.

COSEVI Director Silvia Bolaños said, “the idea is to collect most of the money from fines, but if vehicles are declared as scrap they will be donated to schools and municipalities.” Vehicles in good condition will be sold at a public auction.

COSEVI pays ₡600 million ($1.2 million) per year in parking space to store seized cars, Bolaños said.
