Fuel costs to increase this week

The Regulatory Authority for Public Services (ARESEP) approved the first increase of the year for the per-liter price of fuels that will go into effect when published in the official newspaper La Gaceta this week.

With the new prices users will pay ₡718 ($1.40) per liter of super gasoline (₡43 more). A liter of plus gasoline will cost ₡35 more and will increase from ₡643 ($1.28) to ₡678 ($1.35).

The per-liter price of diesel will increase ₡8 to ₡640 ($1.28).

Motorists wanting to fill their gas tanks (at an average of 45 liters) will pay ₡32,310 ($64.60) for super gasoline, ₡1,935 more than they are paying today.

ARESEP reported that the increase is due to speculation created in the international market because of the lack of fiscal policies in the United States last year.

This adjustment is the result of the extraordinary calculation formula, which takes into account international prices of gasoline and diesel, according to the commodity exchange market in New York.
