Costa Rican police seize 15 vehicles in drag racing sweep

Some 100 officers from the National Police, Traffic Police and Judicial Investigation Police seized 10 cars and five motorcycles suspected of participating in drag races in the early hours of Wednesday and Thursday.

Officers also arrested three people for reckless driving, one for drug possession and two for violations of the Traffic Law.

The sweep took place in various locations south and west of San José including San Francisco de Dos Ríos, Desamparados and Pavas, and in the province of Heredia.

The vehicles were confiscated and their license plates were removed. According to an official report from the Public Security Ministry various cars also had illegal alterations.

Police seized four guns as well as 125 grams of marijuana and 36 doses of crack in the raids.

Members of the recently formed police drag-racing squad in the last two days have investigated 1,032 people, 227 vehicles and 70 motorcycles in operations conducted from 9 p.m.-3 a.m. in the capital.
