La Sele draws group of death in Copa America

NEW YORK — Costa Rica will face stiff competition from the start in the 2016 Centennial Copa America after landing in the “group of death,” Group A, for the upcoming tournament along with the United States, Colombia and Paraguay.

The draw took place Sunday in New York.

Argentina and Chile, runner-up and champion, respectively, of last year’s Copa America, will face off in the same group, D, which also includes Panama and Bolivia.

Brazil, the other regional power, landed with Ecuador, Peru and Haiti in Group B.

Mexico will have to face Uruguay in Group C, along with Jamaica and Venezuela.

The Centennial Copa America started in 1916. This year it will be played in the United States from June 3-26 in 10 different cities.

Costa Rica will face off against Paraguay on June 4 in Orlando, Florida.

La Sele’s next game will be against the U.S. on June 7 in Chicago, Illinois, and then against Colombia on June 11 in Houston, Texas.
