Is Disney coming to Costa Rica?

On a Wednesday morning TV talk show in Costa Rica, “Buen Día,” Liberia Mayor Luis Gerardo Castañeda announced that the Disney Corporation has purchased land in Costa Rica on which they intend to build a theme park. But Sarah Domenech, public relations manager for Disney Destinations, told The Tico Times the rumor is not true.

“What I can say right now is that the news is completely false,” she said.

Domenech would not comment further on the reports that had circulated widely in Costa Rican media on Wednesday morning. In an official press statement, Angela Bliss, vice president of external communications with the Disney Corporation, also denied the news.

“At Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, we continually look for ways to grow our business and as part of that process, we have conversations with many different entities. While Costa Rica is an attractive market, we have no plans for the region at this time,” the statement said.

The mayor told The Tico Times that the park’s future location would be south of the Daniel Oduber International Airport, in Llano Grande, Liberia, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste. A development company, Sun Ranch Limitada, purchased a large chunk of that area and announced intentions to build an amusement park in 2012. Disney was unable to immediately confirm whether or not the company is associated with them.
