Singer Lila Downs returns to Costa Rica in November

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Lila Downs will play two shows in Costa Rica Nov. 9-10 at the National Theater in downtown San José. Downs’ extraordinary voice, soulful songs and powerful stage presence have captivated audiences worldwide.

Downs, accompanied by her band, The Mysterious, will perform hits from past albums as well as songs from her upcoming album, “Pecados y Milagros” (Sins and Miracles), to be released in October.

Songs on her new album were inspired by her young son, as well as various themes including sin, miracles, and corruption and violence in society, according to a press release from meridianoradio.com. The album features original material and traditional themes.

Through her unique voice and songwriting style, Downs denounces social injustice, sings about the pain of migration, and promotes women’s rights. Her music bridges the gap between the ancient and modern world. She accomplishes this by combining a range of music styles and languages in her pieces.

Currently, Downs and musical director Paul Cohen, also her husband, are writing songs for a musical version of “Like Water for Chocolate,” based on the novel by Laura Esquivel.

Promoters Meridiana Luz Producciones say the two concerts celebrate the 14th anniversary of the program Meriadiano on Radio U Costa Rica (101.9FM).

Tickets are on sale at the National Theater box office (2221-5341, www.teatronacional.go.cr). Prices range from ₡18,000-₡42,000 ($36-$84). For more information, email meridianaluz@gmail.com.
