Juan Santamaría International Airport closed briefly in the predawn hours on Monday following several hours of eruptions from Turrialba Volcano on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

Ten outbound flights were canceled Monday morning and another four inbound flights were rescheduled,  according to Silvia Chaves, spokeswoman for Aeris, the company that operates the airport. Juan Santamaría, 67 km away from the volcano, was closed between 3:30 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. Monday morning.

Some canceled flights will be rescheduled by their operators Monday, Chaves said.

Travelers can check www.aeris.cr for more details on their flights.

Turrialba Volcano started erupting after 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, sending ash into the air for 45 minutes. A total of five similar eruptions took place between then and 4:16 a.m. Monday, according to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica.

This is the latest in a string of airport closings this year because of ash from Turrialba Volcano, which makes the runway unsafe to use and can damage plane motors.
