National Theater announces 2015 season

Excitement reached a boiling point when the staff of the National Theater started to unveil its 2015 season on Wednesday morning in the theater’s café. The presentation included speeches by General Director Inés Revuelta Sánchez and Culture Minister Elizabeth Fonseca Corrales, who announced much of the new programming at The National Theater, including docent tours for hearing-impaired visitors and “Viernes de Trios” (“Trio Fridays”) that will feature free acoustic performances.

Revuelta made a big splash last year: After being appointed general director of The National Theater, Revuelta spearheaded a massive celebration for the institution’s 117 th anniversary.

While The National Theater will host scores of productions in 2015, here are some forthcoming standouts:

Through Feb. 15: “Virus,” the one-woman drama by Ana Istarú.

Feb. 7: Piano concert for the eighth annual “Suzuki Fest,” 5 p.m.

Feb. 13: Special concert by the National Symphony Orchestra, 5 p.m.

Feb. 15: Traditional Music of China, 7 p.m.

Feb. 28: The Big Band of Costa Rica celebrates its 25th anniversary, 7 p.m.

March 21 & 22: “Romeo and Juliet,” the classic Sergei Prokofiev ballet, Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 5 p.m.
