7 injured in Limón bar shootout involving at least one AK-47 assault rifle

A shootout in front of a bar in the city of Limón in the early hours of Monday morning left seven Costa Rican men injured, including a 19-year old, according to a statement from the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ). Police suggested that the firefight was likely drug related.

At approximately 3:50 a.m., two vehicles approached the bar El Caracol in downtown Limón, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Servers told the group that the bar was closing, and when they walked back to their vehicles, a third vehicle approached. The vehicle stopped and at least three passengers got out and opened fire. Passengers from the other cars fired back, leaving seven injured. OIJ agents found several types of bullet casings at the scene, including some from an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9 mm handgun.

A 19-year-old man surnamed Porras was shot in the right foot; a 39-year-old man surnamed Hernández was hit on several parts of his body; and another man surnamed Morales, 26, was shot in the chest. Four more were also injured in the shootout. They were identified with the last names of Reyes, 25, Dobrosky, 31, Michel, 27, and González, 32.

Police are investigating the incident.
