Elena Rybakina has won the year-end World No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career, defeating fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday. The 27-year-old needed just one more victory to guarantee that Aryna Sabalenka could not overtake her before the end of the season. She accomplished that in 70 minutes, adding another milestone to a remarkable year that has already brought her two Grand Slam titles.
Rybakina becomes the 17th woman in WTA history to finish a season ranked No. 1 and the first player representing Kazakhstan, male or female, to achieve the year-end top ranking in singles or doubles. Thursday’s result also means Rybakina will enter the 2027 season at the top of women’s tennis, regardless of what happens at next month’s WTA Finals in Indian Wells, California.
Her performance against Putintseva was convincing from the start. Rybakina never lost her serve, fired six aces and faced only one break point, which she saved in the final game before closing out the match. The victory extended her winning streak to five matches following last week’s title at the Ningbo Open in China.
Rybakina’s rise to the top has been one of the biggest stories in women’s tennis this season. She began 2026 by winning the Australian Open, defeating Sabalenka in the final to claim her second Grand Slam title. Her first major championship came at Wimbledon in 2022. In September, she added the US Open title, again beating Sabalenka in the championship match. That victory brought her Grand Slam total to three and helped her take over the World No. 1 ranking for the first time, ending Sabalenka’s 99-week run at the top.
But Rybakina’s success has extended well beyond the Grand Slams. She has won four singles titles this season, more than any other player on the WTA Tour, with victories at the Australian Open, Stuttgart, US Open and Ningbo. She has also reached six finals and recorded a tour-leading 54 match wins.
Her consistency has been particularly important in the race for the year-end ranking. Despite finishing runner-up at major tournaments in Indian Wells and Toronto, Rybakina continued collecting ranking points throughout the season, gradually building an advantage over her closest rivals.
There were setbacks along the way. After winning the US Open, she lost her opening match in Beijing and missed the Wuhan Open because of a leg injury. She responded by successfully defending her Ningbo title, the first time in her career she had won the same tournament in consecutive years.
That victory left her needing only one more match win to secure the year-end No. 1 ranking, and she wasted little time accomplishing that goal in Tokyo. “I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved this season and the consistency I’ve shown throughout the year,” Rybakina said in a statement released by the WTA.
She now advances to the Tokyo quarterfinals, where she will face Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in a rematch of last week’s Ningbo final. Fernandez earned her place by defeating Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-6 (8) on Thursday. Rybakina won their previous meeting 6-2, 6-2 and holds a 4-2 career advantage over the Canadian.
A title in Tokyo would give Rybakina her fifth trophy of 2026 and the 16th singles title of her career. Beyond Tokyo, her next major challenge will be the WTA Finals, scheduled for November 8–15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California. The tournament brings together the eight leading singles players of the season and features a round-robin format before the semifinals and final.
Rybakina enters as the defending champion after winning the 2025 WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She will attempt to become the first player since Serena Williams to successfully defend the season-ending championship. She will also receive the Chris Evert WTA No. 1 Trophy during a presentation at Indian Wells, recognizing her achievement as the world’s top-ranked player at the end of the season.
Although her position at No. 1 is now secure, Rybakina still has an opportunity to finish an already historic season with another major championship.
