Fito Páez, Judas Priest and Whitesnake announce summer tour dates in Costa Rica

An Argentine rock legend and two old-time metal mainstays announced concerts Monday. And world-renowned funk-rockers, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, also sparked rumors last week that the band could be on its way to Costa Rica soon.

Argentina’s Fito Páez will play June 25 at 8 p.m. in the Melico Salazar Theater in downtown San José. The Latin American star released some of Argentina’s best-selling albums, including “El amor después del amor” and “Circo Beat.” Tickets went on sale Tuesday at music store Vertigo with prices from ₡20,000 ($40) to ₡50,000 ($100). Páez played a to a packed crowd at a free concert last year in La Sabana park, west of San José, as part of the the International Arts Festival 2010.

Judas Priest, vanguards of the metal movement in the 1970s, will perform with hair metal personalities Whitesnake on September 27 at the National Stadium. Fronted by metal luminary Rob Halford, Judas Priest is band best-known for hits like “Breaking the Law” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.” Whitesnake achieved mainstream success with the song “Here I Go Again” in the late 1980s. Tickets go on sale May 13 at www.laboleteria.co.cr and various authorized ticket dealers. Prices have not yet been confirmed.

The announcement comes one month after acclaimed thrash metal group Slayer confirmed a concert date on June 17 at Ricardo Saprissa Stadium in Tibás, north of San José. With symphonic metal band Helloween playing a concert last week, metal acts have dominated the Costa Rican music scene this year. A Motorhead concert was canceled earlier this month. However, these bands are not exactly in their prime.

Another decades-old group, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are building buzz that the band will be giving its first show in Costa Rica since 2002. On April 19, Maria Ugarte, of Costa Rica, sent a message via the social network Twitter to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea asking the group if they planned on giving its second-ever show in Costa Rica. To her shock, he responded with a message insinuating the band might have an impending tour date in the country.

Wrote Flea: “We will be in costa rica before you know it! for all the ticos and ticas!!! yeeeeeeeah thats right.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have sold more than 60 million records worldwide and will release a new album this August.
