Costa Rica National Police seize 7,000 bottles of illegal hooch

National Police officers in the Caribbean canton of Pococí, Limón, over the weekend seized 7,000 bottles of adulterated liquor and shut down two local bars that sold them.

The liquor was fabricated from non-distilled alcohol, it had no indication of its alcoholic volume and many impurities were visible inside the bottles, “likely due to lack of appropriate hygiene during its preparation,” a police report stated.

The joint operation was carried out by officials from the Health Ministry, Labor Ministry, the Pococí Municipality, the National Liquor Factory, National Production Council, the Tax Administration, Fiscal Control Police, and agents of the Judicial Investigation Police.

Police officers said that the operation was conducted after receiving reports of various shipments of smuggled liquor in the area.
