Group G: Germany vs. Portugal

Many anticipated that this would be one of the best games of the week, instead the Germans turned it into a blowout, 4-0 win. Portugal played most of the game down a man after defender Pepe’s moronic headbutt of Germany’s Thomas Müller.

Group F: Iran vs. Nigeria

Neither Iran or Nigeria’s Super Eagles impressed in the World Cup’s first tie — a scoreless one at that.

Group G: Ghana vs. United States

The U.S.’s 2-1 victory finally purged the curse of Ghana, the team that had eliminated the Stars and Stripes from the previous two World Cup. Captain Clint Dempsey scored for the United States just 35 seconds into the match, but Ghana controlled possession for most of the match and finally equalized at the 82 minute. Four minutes later, a clutch header by John Brooks allowed the U.S. to steal the win..
