Police in Costa Rica rescue starving toucan from abandoned house

Officials at the Ballena National Marine Park had an unexpected guest for a day when members of the Tourist Police discovered a starving toucan in an abandoned home near the shore in Dominical, a picturesque beach town along Costa Rica’s Southern Pacific coast. The toucan, which appeared to have been left without food or care, was in dire condition when it was found.

Authorities believe the bird was being kept illegally as a pet before it was abandoned along with the house. Keeping exotic wildlife as pets is illegal in Costa Rica, and the incident has raised concerns about the mistreatment of wildlife in the region. Police are now actively searching for suspects responsible for abandoning both the home and the toucan. The illegal trade and captivity of exotic animals is an ongoing issue in many areas, and authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity involving wildlife.

Upon its discovery, the malnourished toucan was rushed to Ballena National Marine Park, where it received immediate emergency care from wildlife experts. Due to its weakened state, the bird needed specialized treatment to ensure its recovery. After receiving the necessary medical attention, the toucan was transferred to a nearby wildlife rescue center in Quepos, where it will continue to receive care and rehabilitation.

Rescue centers like the one in Quepos play a vital role in rehabilitating injured or abandoned wildlife, with the goal of eventually releasing the animals back into their natural habitats. In the meantime, the search for those responsible for the toucan’s abandonment continues.
