Injured striker Álvaro Saborío will travel with Costa Rica to the World Cup

Forward Álvaro Saborío announced Tuesday that he plans to travel with Costa Rica during the World Cup.

Saborío would’ve directed the Ticos’ attack during the tournament, but doctors discovered a broken fifth metatarsal in his right foot last Thursday. He will need three to four months to recovery from the injury after undergoing a successful surgery Monday.

The Costa Rica Football Federation had said it hoped Saborío would accompany La Sele at the World Cup. On Facebook, the Real Salt Lake striker confirmed his attendance in Brazil.

I want to thank the fans that since the first day I wore the La Sele shirt have supported me and given me good vibes.

Thanks to all who have tried to make me feel good despite the pain I’ve been through. I want to say thanks to all.

I have received support from teammates and other teams, that affection from all of you has given me the encouragement to go. I will be supporting the team and will see them make history.

Saborío, who led Costa Rica in qualifying with eight goals, was dearly missed last night when Japan roughed up the Ticos, 3-1, in a friendly in Tampa.
