Costa Rica Gives Peace Another Chance

With pressure mounting for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing border dispute between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Costa Rican officials Thursday agreed with a recommendation from the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) to delay taking action on the issue for another 24 hours. The decision was aimed at buying time while politicians from both sides of the border strategize their next move.

According to María Isabel Salvador, an ALADI permanent delegate from Ecuador, the group’s recommendation hopes to “permit both parties to reach a deal and find a peaceful solution to an alarming situation.”

Costa Rica’s Foreign Minister, René Castro, said that by waiting another day his country had “decided to give peace another chance.”
