Chinchilla, Ban Ki-Moon meet in Guatemala

President Laura Chinchilla asked United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon for help fighting drug trafficking during a meeting in Guatemala on Wednesday morning. Chinchilla told the secretary general that Central America needs more help from the main drug-consuming nations in order to reduce drug trafficking in the region, according to the Casa Presidencial.

Ban Ki-Moon met with the leaders of the Central American Integration System to discuss societal problems including drugs and violence. At the meetings with Ban were presidents Chinchilla, Álvaro Colom (Guatemala), Porfirio Lobo (Honduras) and Prime Minister of Belize Dean Barrow. Panama and the Dominican Republic were represented by their vice presidents, Juan Carlos Varela and Rafael Alburquerque, respectively and El Salvador by Chancellor Hugo Martínez. Nicaragua did not send a representative.
