Presidents of Honduras and El Salvador to meet Friday

SAN SALVADOR – El Salvador President Mauricio Funes confirmed that he will meet in San Salvador with Honduran President Porfirio Lobo to discuss bilateral issues.

Lobo is set to arrive in San Salvador as a guest at the inauguration of the new board of the Central American Parliament, which will be chaired for one year by Salvadoran congressman Leonel Bucaro.

Among the topics to be addressed by the two leaders is Isla Conejo, a half-square-kilometer island located in the Gulf of Fonseca, in the Pacific Ocean, whose waters are shared by El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

El Salvador and Honduras claim sovereignty over the island, which was left to the Hondurans during the Salvadoran civil war (1980-1992).

Funes said the leaders will only discuss the issue, as a previous agreement exists stating that all matters related to the Gulf of Fonseca will be addressed only when leaders of the three countries are present.
