Watch dolphins and rays devour hundreds of thousands of fish

A large school of lantern fish was spotted off Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula in the southern Pacific last week. Lantern fish are among the most common vertebrates on Earth, but the deep ocean off the Osa Peninsula is the only known place where the fish gather near the surface in dense packs known as bait balls.

The spectacle drew in a super pod of spinner dolphins (literally thousands of dolphins) as well as a school of giant mobula rays. The Tico Times’ Shawn Larkin, Lindsay Fendt and Sean Martin were there to capture it on video.
