Thanks to the leadership of Park Ranger Bernal Valderramos and the association ProParques, visitors to the Southern Zone’s Chirripó National Park, home to Costa Rica’s highest mountain, will have an easier time navigating, with repaired, updated and added signage.
The improvements are part of ProParque’s Project Leaders program, which seeks to shed light on the great work done by many of Costa Rica’s park rangers while helping promote future national park improvement projects.
Each year, ProParques selects from a group of project proposals. Winning projects receive funding from the non-profit group.
The Chirripó project will repair 55 damaged and aging signs, and install 60 new ones on the park’s network of hiking trails. Thanks in part to the repairs, Chirripó was awarded a “Blue Flag” ecological award this year, the first time the park has won Costa Rica’s seal of sustainability.
Some 7,000 people visit the park each year.
