With about $100 million in earthquake damage, Costa Rica declares state of emergency

Damage caused by Thursday´s 6.2-magnitude earthquake could cost $100 million, the Costa Rican government announced as it declared a state of emergency for the hardest hit areas. Speeding up relief and recovery funds, the emergency declaration encompasses the cantons of Alajuela, Grecia, Poás, Alfaro Ruiz and Valverde Vega, all in the province of Alajuela, northwest of San José, and the cantons of Heredia, Barva, Santa Bárbara and Sarapiquí in the Heredia province, north of the capital.— Monday, 2:07 p.m.
