With continuing nice weather on the Pacific side, the inshore fishing has been the main focus on the central and southern coasts, and some sailfish and marlin have been caught on the northern coast.
The weather on the Caribbean side has been uncooperative, but they are still catching fish in the backwater.
Northern Pacific
Ralph Solano of Costa Rica Wild Fishing reports good numbers of snook, corvina, jack and mahimahi in and around the bays. Light tackle and kayaks make for some great fishing.
Capt. Lee Keidel of Kingpin Sportfishing reports some near-shore action for small mahimahi, tuna, snapper, amberjack, sails and wahoo. The boats going offshore have been catching a few marlin, sailfish, mahimahi and tuna. Keidel’s fiancée, Keri, caught her first marlin, a 400-pound blue.
On the Gamefisher II in Flamingo, Capt. Richard Chellemi has been doing a mix of reef and offshore fishing. On the reef, he’s been getting some snapper, grouper, wahoo and more, while offshore there’s been a steady sailfish bite with some mahimahi mixed in for the grill. The highlight of the past couple of weeks was a 500-pound blue marlin caught by 15-year-old Hope Heathcott from Austin, Texas.
Capt. Warren Sellers of Warren Sellers Sportfishing reports good weather, a scattered sailfish and marlin bite, some big mahimahi and good numbers of yellowfin tuna and wahoo.
Bushwacker Sportfishing’s Capt. Skeet Warren reports good weather and calm seas. On a recent trip, he caught three nice wahoo and a 60-pound-plus roosterfish.
Capt. Rick Ruhlow on the Kingfisher in Carrillo reports clean blue water and baitfish moving in closer to shore. He’s been catching some sailfish, small mahimahi and a few wahoo, and has also seen some marlin.
Central Pacific
Capt. Brandon Keene on the Fish Whistle recently fished a full day and caught a 70-pound-plus roosterfish, a couple of mackerel and big jack, a handful of snapper in the 15-pound range and half a dozen grouper in the 10-pound range.
Capt. RJ Lillie on the Disco Pirate has been fishing at a local hot spot called the “26 rock” and has been catching good numbers of wahoo, small yellowfin tuna and mahimahi, and a few big jack. On a recent trip, Lillie and clients saved a turtle that had gotten tangled up in some commercial longline equipment.
Capt. Dana Thomas on the Hoo’s Your Daddy recently caught four roosterfish, four wahoo, five jack crevalle, six mahimahi and one sailfish. A couple of days later, he caught a 40-pound and a 50-pound roosterfish on a half-day trip. When I asked him where he caught his fish, he replied, “In the corner of the mouth.”
Pamela Warren and the Barbarrosa a Los Sueños Marina had some friends in town recently for an amazing week of fishing. Randy Sharon and Gabe Martinez, on their first trip to Costa Rica, caught roosterfish, amberjack, blue trevally, jack crevalle, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahimahi, snapper, grouper, cabrilla and rainbow runner.
Southern Pacific
Capt. Bob Baker of Golfito Sportfishing says the focus of the fishing lately in Zancudo has been inshore. The roosterfish bite has been good near Matapalo using live bait. The corvina bite has also been good, as has the blue trevally and jack crevalle bite.
Deep-dropping has produced some nice groupers. The offshore action has been slow, but Baker expects the marlin and sailfish bite to pick up soon.
Northern Region
John Stauffer fished a half-day at LakeArenal recently and caught a few nice guapote, including one over seven pounds. He says guapote are delicious.
Caribbean
Capt. Eddie Brown on the Bullshark in Tortuguero says the ocean has been a little rough lately, so they’ve been fishing inside the river mouth. Brown recently caught six snook from eight to 20 pounds, using jigs. A couple of days earlier, he caught a 40-pound snapper and hooked a couple of tarpon in the river mouth.
Diann Sánchez of Río Colorado Lodge reports that clients having been enjoying backwater fishing and have had great results catching viejito, snapper, pinto, guapote, mojarra, jack and snook. Before the seas got rough, one guest released five tarpon.
