Diplomatic Relations Renewed with Colombia

Less than 24 hours after announcing Nicaragua’s rupture of official relations with Colombia, President Daniel Ortega reversed his government’s decision following diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis between Colombia and its neighbors.

Ortega made his announcement last Friday afternoon, after Ecuador and Colombia peacefully resolved their conflict, which started a week ago when Colombia bombed a Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia camp inside Ecuadorian territory.

The raid led to a military mobilization by Venezuela and the severance of diplomatic relations by Nicaragua, where the government is in a maritime border dispute with Colombia (TT, March 7).

Tensions, however, were calmed during the Latin American presidential summit meeting last weekend in the Dominican Republic when Colombian President Alvaro Uribe met and shook hands with Ortega and Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa.
