Hurrican Katrina Relief Effort Tomorrow in Escazú

COSTA Rican visitors and residents will be able to join in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort in the western San José suburb of Escazú tomorrow when more than 3,000 books, CDs, DVDs and videos will be sold to benefit the reconstruction of Belle École primary school in Slidell, Louisiana. The school was chosen because it is located in the hometown of Armand and Amelia Joyce, members of Democrats Living Abroad, the organization sponsoring the event.“About 95% of that town was destroyed,” said Bret Porter, treasurer and member of the board of directors for the organization. “That school is where (the Joyces’) daughter is a fifth-grade teacher, and their grandchildren attend there. There are 200 marines at the school right now trying to get it back online.”The group will be offering brand new English-language books and other items ranging in price from ¢500-1,000 ($1-2) at tomorrow’s sale.“These are all current (books) from the last two years; they’re not old-timer books,” Porter said. “The money we help to raise will be used directly for the facility. We hope it makes a difference.”The sale will take place in the courtyard of Plaza Colonial in Escazú, three blocks west of the Soctiabank, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
