Playa Cativo Lodge, a secluded beachfront retreat on the Golfo Dulce in Costa Rica’s Southern Zone, has been admitted into Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the international collection of independently owned boutique properties. The addition gives the Southern Zone yet another foothold in one of the best-known names in independent luxury hospitality.
Founded in 2012, the lodge sits within a private rainforest reserve of roughly 400 hectares (1,000 acres) surrounded by Piedras Blancas National Park, a protected area that once formed part of Corcovado National Park. There is no road to the property. Guests fly into Golfito or Puerto Jiménez and finish the trip with a boat ride of about 30 minutes or arrive by helicopter. The crossing often brings sightings of dolphins and, in season, whales. On land, visitors share the grounds with toucans, scarlet macaws, monkeys and sloths.
The lodge has 18 rooms, ranging from ocean-view guest rooms to casitas with private plunge pools and a family villa. The rooms are designed to stay open to the surrounding forest, and most rely on breezes off the gulf rather than air conditioning, though some room types now offer it.
The property also offers wellness activities and a kitchen built around local ingredients, part of which come from the lodge’s own organic farm. Management says more than 95% of the land is devoted to conservation and that the reserve strengthens the protection of neighboring Piedras Blancas. The operation also relies on renewable energy, organic agriculture, recycling and the elimination of single-use plastics.
The Golfo Dulce itself became Latin America’s first Whale Heritage Site in 2023, a World Cetacean Alliance designation for places where communities protect whales and dolphins. Humpback whales from both hemispheres use the gulf to give birth and nurse their calves.
General manager Kenneth Hidalgo said joining the collection recognizes a style of hospitality rooted in independence, privacy, authenticity and a deep sense of place. He added that conservation stands as one of the lodge’s central pillars, treated as part of the luxury itself and as something guests are invited to take part in.
Hidalgo also said the membership is a chance for international travelers to discover Osa and the Golfo Dulce as one of the world’s great nature and luxury destinations. The lodge describes the surrounding wilderness not as a backdrop but as the reason the property exists. Small Luxury Hotels of the World, known as SLH, has spent more than 35 years building a portfolio of independent boutique hotels and now counts more than 700 properties in over 100 countries.
Its members average around 50 rooms, and the company says it personally visits and vets every hotel before admission and inspects members annually. The company is owned and led by siblings Daniel Shamoon and Jennica Shamoon Arazi. It has been expanding quickly, adding 29 hotels in the first three months of 2026 alone.
Membership carries real commercial weight. Through a partnership with Hilton, more than 550 participating SLH hotels can be booked through Hilton’s own channels, putting small independent properties in front of the chain’s loyalty members. SLH also runs its own complimentary guest loyalty program, The Club by SLH.
Playa Cativo joins a Costa Rican roster that includes Tabacón Thermal Resort and Spa in La Fortuna, Rio Perdido in Bagaces, Hotel Nantipa in Santa Teresa, Los Altos Resort in Manuel Antonio, Alta Las Palomas in San José and Hotel Three Sixty in Ojochal de Osa. It is the only member of the collection on the shores of the Golfo Dulce.
The news caps a strong run for the lodge. It earned a place in Tripadvisor’s 2025 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best awards, ranking fourth among luxury hotels in both Costa Rica and Central America, and says it was honored again in the 2026 edition. For the Southern Zone, which remains far less developed than Guanacaste or the Central Pacific, the recognition adds to a growing reputation among travelers willing to go the extra distance for remote, nature-based luxury.
