Trail Race to Traverse Southern Pacific Coast

Scott Jurek, known as the Lance Armstrong of ultramarathon, is coming to Costa Rica for the fifth annual Coastal Challenge, a six-day trail race that will traverse more than 200 kilometers of the country’s Pacific coastline Feb. 1 to 6.

Unlike last year’s Route of Fire in the northwestern Guanacaste province, this year’s Rainforest Expedition Run kicks off from the southern Pacific beach town of Dominical, weaves at times through the TalamancaMountains and wraps up in CorcovadoNational Park, near the border with Panama. Runners will have to navigate dense jungle and rain-forest trails, windswept highlands, beaches, coastal ranges, rock outcroppings and wide river crossings – a crash course in Costa Rica.

Joining Jurek will be approximately 75 runners. Three out of the last four years, Juan Carlos Solano and Javier Montero, native Ticos, have taken first place.

The race offers both team and individual participation categories, as well as daily adventure tours for guests of the runners.
