Costa Rican Sprinter Sherman Güity Ties Record That Stood Since 2015

Costa Rican sprinter Sherman Güity matched the men’s 100-meter T64 world record with a time of 10.61 seconds at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Güity won the race on July 23, equaling the record set by American Richard Browne at the 2015 World Para Athletics Championships in Doha. Browne’s mark had stood alone for nearly 11 years.

The performance lowered Güity’s previous personal best of 10.65 seconds, which he recorded while winning the Paralympic gold medal at Paris 2024. It also completed a sprint double for the 29-year-old Costa Rican, who had already won the 200 meters T64 earlier in the competition.

Güity crossed the line in the 200 meters in 20.81 seconds, faster than Browne’s world record of 21.27. However, the wind reading was measured at +5.3 meters per second, well above the +2.0 limit for record recognition. The favorable wind meant the time could not be approved as a world record, although it was the fastest 200-meter performance of Güity’s career under any conditions.

There was no such disappointment in the 100 meters. After seeing the time on the stadium screen, Güity said his immediate thought was that the wind could not take the record away from him again. The two victories continued Güity’s dominance in the T64 sprints. He won both the 100 and 200 meters at the Paris Paralympic Games in 2024 after earning gold in the 200 meters and silver in the 100 meters at Tokyo 2020.

His Tokyo victory gave Costa Rica its first Paralympic gold medal. Güity now owns three Paralympic gold medals, one silver and a share of the 100-meter world record. Costa Rica also delivered a strong team performance in Mexico, finishing the four-day Grand Prix with 14 medals: eight gold, two silver and four bronze.

Melissa Calvo, Sofía Orozco and Mari José Martínez each won two gold medals in their events. Costa Rica also earned silver in the universal 4×100-meter relay through the team of Calvo, Güity, Orozco and Daniel Fajardo. Nardy Álvarez, Henry Cárdenas, Dalessandro Abarca and Siler González were among the other Costa Rican athletes who reached the podium.

The Grand Prix was held from July 21 to 24 at the Una Nueva Historia Athletics Centre in Apizaco, Tlaxcala. It brought together more than 400 athletes from 26 countries. Güity is scheduled to continue his international season at the ISTAF meeting in Berlin on August 30 before returning to the World Para Athletics Grand Prix circuit in Cali, Colombia, in September.
