January Inflation Registers at 1.17%

Costa Rica registered a monthly inflation of 1.17% in January.

This rate represents a decrease from the January inflation rates reported in 2005 (1.96%) and 2004 (1.70%), according to the National Statistics and Census Institute (INEC). Inflation over the past 12 months was 13.20%; inflation for 2005 was 14.07% – a level exceeded only by Venezuela in Latin America, according to EFE wire service.

Central Bank President Francisco de Paula Gutiérrez has announced an inflation target rate of 11% for 2006, and 10% for 2007 (TT, Jan. 27).
