U.S. Casino Company Purchases San José Hotel

A U. S. hotel and casino company has purchased a hotel-casino in downtown San José in what the buyers call a “multimillion-dollar” deal.

Holder Hospitality Group International, a division of Holder Hospitality Group, closed its purchase of the Clarion Amón Plaza Hotel in that eponymous northeastern historic district of San José late last month.

Holder Hospitality, which owns and operates 14 hotel-casinos in mediumsized cities throughout the U.S. state of Nevada, bought both the hotel and the Paradiso Casino that operated there and will be running them as a single entity using the existing management staff, said Brian Boylan, vice-president of Holder Hospitality Group International.

“We’re not coming in to gut the place,” Boylan said. “We’re going to make some upgrades and changes but essentially we’re buying what we consider a quality product.”

The Clarion Amón Plaza Hotel is an 87-room, four-star hotel that has been operating in Barrio Amón since 1994.

The hotel is the first Latin American acquisition of the Holder Hospitality Group International, a division of the Holder Hospitality Group. Boylan said the group looked at 22 different hotels in Costa Rica before lighting on the Clarion Amón.

Although changes to the hotel will be slight, Boylan said the group wants to make it “more of an American gaming experience, more of a Nevada gaming experience.”

Holder Hospitality Group grosses more than $1 billion in annual revenue, Boylan said.
