Protecting Costa Rica’s Biodiversity Amid Growing Tourism Demands

Costa Rica’s allure lies in its stunning biodiversity and the chance to immerse in nature, attracting millions of visitors to its national parks, nature reserves, and biological corridors. Known for its sustainable tourism model, Costa Rica has set a global example by aligning tourism with conservation efforts, contributing 8.2% to its GDP. However, as the country faces economic challenges post-COVID-19, the tourism industry must balance growth with sustainability to protect fragile ecosystems. Local authorities and business owners emphasize the need for community inclusion and policies that limit mass tourism, advocating for a model that benefits both the environment and the economy.

How Monteverde Costa Rica Promotes Eco-Friendly Travel

Monteverde is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, sustainable tourism, and vibrant local businesses, drawing visitors from around the world to its cloud forests and eco-conscious offerings. Among its highlights, Stella’s Restaurant and Vecinas Store showcase authentic local flavors and crafts, embodying the spirit of the Hecho en Monteverde consortium. Established in 2020, this group of small businesses, supported by the University of Costa Rica’s Crea-C program, champions sustainability. Key to these efforts, Katy VanDusen and CORCLIMA focus on climate resilience through initiatives like the “Made in Monteverde” certification, which promotes eco-friendly practices, waste reduction, and water conservation across the community.

Costa Rica to Open Three New Urban Natural Parks in San José

Costa Rica is set to establish three new urban natural parks in the Greater San José area, transforming the former Simón Bolívar Zoo, the Lorne Ross Conservation Center, and the former INBioparque into protected green spaces. Announced by Environment and Energy Minister Franz Tattenbach, this designation under Executive Decree 42742-MINAE aims to conserve biodiversity within urban areas. The parks will serve as vital areas for conservation, recreation, and ecotourism, providing citizens with natural havens within the city. Authorities hope this initiative will foster tourism, conservation awareness, and provide unique spaces for residents to reconnect with nature.
