Battered El Salvador Gets Help from DHL, C.R.

Costa Rica will send 4,365 kilograms of relief supplies to El Salvador in the wake of a devastating rainstorm earlier this month that slammed the country, causing floods and landslides comparable to those unleashed by Hurricane Mitch in1998, the administration of President Oscar Arias said Monday.

The humanitarian donation – equivalent to about 4.8 (U.S.) tons – comes as part of an agreement between Costa Rica’s National Emergency Commission (CNE) and leading global courier company DHL.

The company will dispatch its disaster response team to help provide logistical operations for the delivery of humanitarian aid, according to a CNE statement.

The supplies include blankets, diapers, toilet paper, sanitary napkins and cooking appliances. These are among the items on a list of needed supplies compiled by the Salvadoran Civil Protection Department. At least 157 people died and many others still are missing after powerful rains triggered by Hurricane Ida caused flooding and landslides in El Salvador on Nov. 7.

The rains damaged more than 1,800 homes, many bridges and important roads and wiped out swaths of corn, beans, rice, coffee and sugar cane fields.
