Costa Rica Braces for Significant Temperature Spike in Early 2024..

The National Meteorological Institute of Costa Rica has issued a forecast predicting a notable increase in temperatures, estimated to be between 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, over the next three months. This temperature surge is expected to predominantly affect the Central Pacific, North Pacific, and Central Valley regions of the country. The months of January and February 2024 are anticipated to record the highest temperatures for the populace. The primary cause of this escalation in temperatures is attributed to the strong intensity of El Niño, which is projected to persist until May 2024.

Additionally, the record-breaking warmer-than-normal surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea are significant contributors to this climatic change. On a global scale, the European observatory Copernicus has forecasted that the year 2023 might turn out to be the hottest year on record. Domestically, the period from May to October has already shown temperatures higher than the usual averages. Meteorological experts have raised concerns about the repercussions of this temperature rise, indicating a possible increase in forest fire activity in 2024, which could pose significant environmental challenges.

Costa Rica Cracks Down on Deadly Fentanyl..

Costa Rican authorities, in conjunction with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, achieved a major victory in the fight against illicit narcotics by dismantling the first fentanyl production and distribution operation uncovered in Central America. The raids resulted in four arrests, with a fifth individual still being sought, and the seizure of over 1,100 doses of the opioid. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin, has caused record overdose deaths in the United States, with 110,000 fatalities attributed to the drug in 2022. By dismantling the Costa Rican operation, authorities have achieved an important victory, but much work remains to be done to ensure the nation is protected from the lethal epidemic. Vigilance must be exercised across borders, local neighborhoods, and even bars and nightclubs to detect and disrupt any resurgent fentanyl cells.
