CDC Issues Malaria Outbreak Warning for Costa Rica

The CDC has issued a warning regarding an outbreak of malaria in Limón Province, Costa Rica and transmission in Alajuela Province. The Costa Rican Ministry of Health is conducting investigations and advising residents to take measures to avoid mosquito bites. Travelers to these areas should take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and take a prescription antimalarial drug. To prevent malaria, travelers should use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and use bed nets when sleeping. It is important to seek medical care immediately if symptoms of malaria, such as fever, chills, sweats, headache, vomiting, or body aches, develop. The choice of antimalarial drug will depend on several factors, including the individual’s health status, the specific destination, and the duration of travel.

Sexual Violence Incident at Santa Teresa Beach

The recent sexual violence incident against Canadian tourists at Santa Teresa beach in Costa Rica has brought to light the inadequate approach of Costa Rican authorities to dealing with sexual crimes. The victim has filed a formal complaint, warning other females about the area. Stricter laws, more stringent penalties for sexual offenses, education and training for law enforcement agencies, and creating a culture of respect and consent are all essential in handling sexual offenses more competently.
