Floods Continue On Pacific Coast

RAIN and dangerously swelling rivers claimed two lives Monday and continued hounding rural regions of the Pacific slope, especially the northern Pacific province of Guanacaste.Mauren Arroyo, 36, died when a wall collapsed on her in her home in the Central Valley town of Naranjo, west of San José, and Jason Carvajal, 10, died trying to forge a river in Sardinal, in Guanacaste. The National Emergency Commission (CNE) has maintained a red alert in communities in Guanacaste while rains forced the evacuation of nearly 800 people throughout the Pacific, some of those still in shelters after leaving their homes to avoid last week’s floods (TT, Sept. 30).Red Cross rescue volunteers boated 200 people to safety Tuesday in the La Guinea region, where rising water had cut off the roads for two days prior. It reports 301 people are in temporary shelters in Filadelfia, an inland town in Guanacaste.
