Costa Rica Investing $1.7m in National Park Infrastructure

Costa Rica is living up to its responsibility to it’s protected lands.

The government, in partnership with the private sector, will have a project called “Improvement, Employment and Conservation of the Protected Wildlife Areas of the South Pacific” and will use the money to improve the condition of the National Parks in the Southern Pacific area and help stimulate the growth of tourism.

The improvements will also help to generate direct and indirect jobs and continue to allow the development of commercial activity in general. It is also a way to support those that have been heavily hit by the pandemic

The project is being developed in the Marino Ballena, Corcovado, Piedras Blancas, La Amistad International National Parks and in the Golfito National Wildlife Refuge, with financing from the Junta de Desarrollo Regional de la Zona Sur (JUDESUR) and the administration of the resources by the Corcovado Foundation.

The improvements will include, among other areas, the construction of bridges on trails, rooms for officials, a visitor center, shelters and restrooms for visitors.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism generated 225,000 direct jobs and 83,000 indirect jobs in Costa Rica. Costa Rica’s economic impacts were felt hardest by hotels and restaurants according to the Central Bank of Costa Rica.
