Costa Rica Doghouse Hit by Meteorite Up for Sale

In April 2019 a meteorite came crashing down on a doghouse here in Costa Rica and not only did the German Shepherd named Roky survive and walked away without a scratch but now his doghouse is going to be auctioned off at World Famous Christie’s auction house.

The family, who live in North Central Costa Rica, in the city of Aguas Zarcas, preserved the pressed wood and oxidized tin doghouse and are now selling it. The structure has a pre-sale estimate of $200,000 to $300,000 and a meteorite from that night is expected to “fetch” anywhere between an incredible $40,000 to $60,000!

Meteorites are fragments of natural material from interplanetary space that impact Earth and are incredibly rare objects; the combined weight of all the known meteorites is less than the annual output of gold.

James Hyslop, head of Science and Natural History for Christie’s, said, ‘This is a really exciting auction and opportunity for collectors.

Darryl Pitt, curator for the Macovich Collection added “Awe and wonder seem to be in short supply these days, but not when you have in your hand an object from outer space that is older than the Earth; an object that delivered the precursors of life to our planet billions of years ago — and then billions of years later ended the reign of the dinosaurs and the opening for humankind,”

The online bidding ends on February 23rd.
