Costa Rica COVID-19 cases slightly lower after 6 weeks of increases

However, even with this good news that the overall numbers finally came down, unfortunately, the number of hospitalizations and deaths continue to go up. To make better sense of all this, let’s take a closer look at the numbers that came out this week from the ministry of health.

As of February 8, the Health Ministry reported 6136 cases were recorded, 18 deaths and 791 people remain hospitalized, 13 in private centers and 958 in the public system, of this total 137 people are hospitalized in the ICU and 834 are in a public room.

A Closer Look at the Numbers

Week Number 5:

  • 39,036 new Covid-19 cases from January 30 to February 5
  • A decrease of 575 new Covid Cases compared to week 4, (January 23 to January 29)
  • The average number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients in Costa Rica was 822 (the week before it was 650 people)
  • There were 668 new hospital admissions associated with Covid-19, up from 604 the previous week (10.5% increase)

These totals represent an average of 5576 cases per day and a 1.4 % week-over-week decrease.

Breakdown by Age Groups

  • 74.8 % were in the age group of 65 and over with 4 deaths
  • 17.1% in the 50-64 age group
  • 7.2% in the age group of 18 to 49 years of age
  • 0.9% for minors.

In Week 5 Costa Rica added 111 deaths related to Covid-19, a 30.5% increase compared to the prior week.

Grand Total

This brings the total number of deaths in Costa Rica, as of February 8, 2022, that can be directly related to Covid-19 since the pandemic began to 7,712!
