Costa Rica adds 147 coronavirus cases, 81 recoveries

Costa Rica confirmed 147 new cases of the coronavirus over the past day, totaling 2,515 cumulative known cases, the Health Ministry announced Wednesday afternoon.

The 147 new cases mark the largest day-over-day increase reported by Costa Rican authorities during the crisis.

Eighty-one more people have been classified as recovered under Costa Rica’s new definitions that qualify certain patients based on time rather than a negative test.

Costa Rica has 1,293 active cases and 1,210 recoveries.

Twelve people have died in Costa Rica after contracting the coronavirus. Thirty people remain hospitalized with COVID-19. Five people are in intensive care, two more than Tuesday.

President Carlos Alvarado said Wednesday that the increase in new cases is “concerning” but that some regions will be allowed to proceed in resuming economic activities. More details will be announced this week.

Orange alert expanded again

The canton of Corredores and the towns of La Vega and Bonanza in the district of Florencia (San Carlos) are under an orange alert as of 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, June 25.

For all regions under an orange alert, extended weeknight driving bans (5 p.m. – 5 a.m.) apply, as do evening and weekend restrictions on commercial businesses.

Below is a map of all areas under an orange alert:
