Cartaginés and Guadalupe battle for last spot in Costa Rica soccer semifinals

Cartaginés, mainstays of the first division of Costa Rican soccer, and the modest Guadalupe, founded three years ago, will decide the last ticket to the semifinals of the Clausura Championship in the 22nd and final date of the tournament’s regular season.

Cartaginés have not reached the semis since the Winter 2014 tournament, when Guadalupe did not yet exist.

The face-to-face between the brumosos and Guadalupanos will take place Wednesday at the “Fello” Meza Stadium in Cartago.

For the locals, led by two-time World Cup participant Hernán Medford, a draw is enough to punch their ticket through. Cartaginés enters the fixture with 34 points, while Guadalupe has 32 and needs a victory to advance.

The qualifier will face Saprissa, which has secured first place, allowing the club to close the semifinal round and an eventual final at its home stadium.

The other classified clubs are Herediano and Alajuelense, which will face each other in the semifinals.

All matches are being played without spectators as part of Costa Rica’s efforts to prevent community transmission of the coronavirus.
